Thousands of hours worth of hard, local work is on display this weekend at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre.

More than 200 quilts could be seen Friday, April 26, as the triannual Penticton Quilt Show returned after a multi-year pandemic hiatus.

The show, which is hosted by the Penticton Quilters’ Guild and its 56 members, showcases the talent of local quilters and educates the public on the work the group does for the community throughout the year.

Donating to RCMP Victim Assistance, Salvation Army, Meals On Wheels and the South Okanagan Women In Need Society are just a few of the organizations the quilters choose to support.

“It may seem like a little thing to donate but it shows that the community cares,” said Donna Picard, the show’s advertising chair.

If all goes according to plan, Picard says the next show will be held in April 2027.

Although it always proves to be a hit whenever it comes to town, the event organizer says it can only happen every three years.

“It takes a lot of work to quilt, like hundreds of thousands of hours,” she said. “That’s also why I love the show…it’s about educating people about what it takes and all the different types of things you can make.

“A quilt can be anything, from a pillowcase to a duffle bag. It’s a fun way to express yourself.”

Entry to the show is $10. Children 12 years of age and younger get in for free.

Along with the door prizes provided by local businesses, there is also a market that features 11 vendors and a “Guild Boutique” that offers a selection of hand-made items.

Picard said people from Kelowna, Vernon, Oliver, Osoyoos and Princeton made the trip Friday to take in the show’s opening day.

The show continues on Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
