Oscar Wilde back at Okanagan Winery

Township 7 Vineyards and Winery, along with Twisted Tree Theatre-Bare Bones Production have partnered for their second year to produce one of Oscar Wilde’s most popular plays, An Ideal Husband.

“Wine and the arts are truly a perfect pairing. We’re proud to support the marriage of the two with one of our own winery employees, Jen Viens, and her up-and-coming Twisted Tree Theatre Company,” said Mike Raffan, proprietor of Township 7. “We encourage theatre enthusiasts from across the Pacific Northwest to join us at our two wineries and be entertained by one of Oscar Wilde’s outstandingly funny plays, who’s biting political satire is as relevant today as it was over a century ago.”

First produced over a century ago in London, in January 1895, Wilde was arrested a few months after the premiere due to his notoriously unconventional lifestyle, with his name publicly removed from the play. Set in late Victorian England, the comedy centres around sex, blackmail and political corruption. Following the course of 24 hours, the play is a brilliant mix of farce and morality, infused with pithy witticisms, satirizing the conventions and social hypocrisy of the time.

“Twisted Tree is so excited to partner with Township 7 Vineyards and Winery for another year of Wilde at the Winery. Their support of the arts in these challenging economic times is greatly appreciated,” said Viens, who is producing the play. “Last year was a rousing success and such a true reflection of what Twisted Tree Theatre stands for: real, accessible, and entertaining theatre in a laid back and welcoming atmosphere.”

Okanagan performances will be held amongst the vines in Township 7’s Naramata winery at 1450 McMillan Ave. on July 29, 30 and August 5,6 before the production moves to their Langley winery for its final weekend. Open seating commences at 6 p.m., with the play beginning at 7 pm. Alfresco picnics and wines by the glass will be available for purchase. Wilde at the Winery tickets are available through Twisted Tree Theatre Company at jen@twistedtreetheatre.com or Township 7 at 250-770-1743 or wine@township7.com.
