Witnesses wanted in Oliver apartment complex fire
A fire at an apartment complex in Oliver on Monday continues to be investigated by RCMP and they are asking for any witnesses to come forward.
"It is anticipated that the public will play a significant role in solving this potentially life threatening occurrence, with investigators seeking any information from possible witnesses," said Sgt. Ken Harrington. "We ask that residents and others who reside in the area contact police should they have observed anything or anyone suspicious at or near the apartment complex of 6061 Kootenay Ave. in Oliver."
The Penticton South Okanagan Regional General Investigation Section has assumed lead management of the investigation and RCMP said based on initial forensic scene examination, they have determined the fire is suspicious in nature.
RCMP arrived to the scene of the fire around 11:18 p.m. on Monday night to a significant portion of the south side of the building already engulfed in flames. No serious injuries were reported, just effects of smoke inhalation, but the 35 residents were displaced. Many stayed at the Alliance Church in Oliver who provided lodging. Oliver fire department media liaison Spencer Tribbick told the Penticton Western News it appeared the fire may have started in a shed on a patio below one of the suites in the southeast corner that received the most damage.
Anyone with information is requested to contact Cpl. Scott VanEvery of the South Okanagan Regional GIS at 250-485-6223 or those wishing to provide information anonymously can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
