High-profile Canucks draft picks to play in Penticton's Young Stars Classic
The full cast of Vancouver's rebuild – sorry, re-tool – will be on display in Penticton this September, when the Canucks do battle one again in the NHL's Young Stars Classic.
Vancouver will be joined by the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, and the Winnipeg Jets, and the tournament will run from September 12-15, 2014. Tickets go on sale today, July 11, and tournament packages (six games) cost $60.00 a pop.
The Canucks' only healthy first-round draft pick from June's Entry Draft – Sault Ste. Marie center Jared McCann – will be in Penticton for the Youngstars Classic, as will last year's OHL goal scoring champion Dane Fox, who was signed during the 2013/14 NHL season.
Sixth overall pick Jake Virtanen, from Abbotsford, B.C., is recovering from shoulder surgery and won't be able to play in the Young Stars Classic.
Four other first-round picks since 2011 – 2011's Nicklas Jensen, 2012's Brendan Gaunce, and 2013's Hunter Shinkaruk and Bo Horvat – will also be in Penticton, as will two players who have seen time with the Canucks in the NHL, forward Mike Zalewski and defenceman Frank Corrado.
As for the enemy, Edmonton Oilers' 2014 first rounder Leon Draisaitl – selected third overall in June – will play at the Young Stars Classic, alongside other prospects Mitch Moroz, Darnell Nurse, David Musil, and Laurent Brossoit.
Calgary's fourth overall pick in June, the Kingston Frontenacs' Sam Bennett, will suit up for the Flames, as will 2013 first rounders Emile Poirier and Morgan Klimchuk.
Nikolaj Ehlers – the highly skilled, Danish, ninth overall pick of the Winnipeg Jets, who plays for the QMJHL's Halifax Mooseheads – will play for the Winnipeg Jets in Penticton. So will Surrey native Nic Petan, 2013 first rounder Josh Morrissey, and J.C. Lipon of the WHL's Kamloops Blazers.
