Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt is in Penticton this morning for an “important announcement” regarding the Satikw Crossing Bridge.

Valcourt will deliver word on an “economic development opportunity for Penticton Indian Band and the entire community of Penticton,” according to a media advisory which noted the bridge project in the subject line.

The federal government announced in March it would contribute $500,000 to design and engineering of the proposed new Okanagan River channel crossing at Green Avenue.

Penticton Indian Band Chief Jonathan Kruger told the Western News at the time that the bridge would finally allow access to 60 hectares of land that was cut off when the river was channelized in the 1950s.

A new hotel and retail space are among the developments reportedly planned for the site.

More to come.
