COVID-19 cases in the South Okanagan Similkameen are slowly ticking back upwards, largely driven by increases in Summerland.

The South Okanagan Similkameen region saw 38 cases over the week of Nov. 14 to 20, up from the 31 recorded over Nov. 7 to 13.

The growing number of cases have largely come from the Summerland local health area, which saw cases double to 14 over Nov. 14 to 20 from seven the week before.

The Penticton local health area, which includes Naramata and Kaleden, maintained the region’s most cases with 18 recorded over the most recent week, up slightly from the 15 recorded over Nov. 7 to 13.

Cases in the Similkameen continued to drop, with Keremeos staying steady at two new cases for the second week in a row and Princeton dropping to one new case from the three recorded over Nov. 7 to 13.

The Southern Okanagan local health area also dropped slightly from four cases to three recorded over the most recent week.

In recent weeks the increases to weekly cases in Summerland coincided with exposures at schools in the community, however currently Interior Health is not reporting any exposures.

Vaccinations continue to slowly advance for those aged 12 and over, with third doses quickly picking up in Penticton. From Nov. 16 to Nov. 23, three per cent of those eligible received their third dose to bring the total to 12 per cent of people with three shots.

Summerland, the Southern Okanagan and Keremeos are all close behind with 10 per cent of people with three doses, up from eight.

Princeton’s third dose rate increased more modestly, up to six per cent from five the week before.

The number of second doses in many of the regions are approaching their limit, with 86 per cent of people aged 12 and above in the Southern Okanagan with two shots, compared to 91 per cent with a single dose. Summerland and Penticton are nearing their second dose cap as well, with both sitting at 85 per cent second dose rate and 88 per cent with a single shot.

Princeton and Keremeos both have 83 per cent of people with a single shot, with 79 per cent of Princeton local health area residents with two shots and 78 per cent of Keremeos residents.
