The three-storey rental apartment in downtown Penticton is expected to go to public hearing Sept. 6.

The 16-unit apartment building is being proposed for 655 Ellis Street where there is currently an empty lot.

The project, if approved, would add 11 one-bedroom units and five 2-bedroom units to Penticton’s rental inventory.

The applicant in his letter to the city said the apartment will be geared to working professionals.

“The proposed development will inject much-needed rental housing into the market, which currently has a vacancy rate of less than one per cent. This would be yet another step toward reducing pressure on local employers who face challenges attracting skilled workers due to a lack of rental housing options,” said the applicant Ryzak Properties.

The apartment is on city council’s Aug. 16 agenda to approve first reading and to change the property designation to urban residential from ground oriented residential and to rezone it to urban residential.

Staff are recommending that a 0.914 m road dedication be completed prior to the issuance of occupancy for

any dwelling units.

If council agrees with staff recommendations, the project will go to public hearing Sept. 6.

There have been two information meetings about the Ellis Street apartment. People mostly favoured the new development with some concerns that one parking spot per unit wasn’t enough for such a busy area.
