Update:

An early-morning, three-alarm blaze at the vacant Log Cabin Motel Tuesday may possibly have been caused from smokers’ materials.

According to fire inspector Mike Richards of the Penticton Fire Department who was on scene later that day, the fire started on the outside of the building which housed the office and residence.

The 36-unit complex located on a 1.9 acre corner lot at 3287 Skaha Lake Rd. has been closed for sometime following the announced sale of the property last December for $2.9 million.

“The owner reported that although there was still electricity to the building, all of the breakers were turned off and we’ve confirmed the breakers were off so it wasn’t accidental electrical,” said Richards. “There was no official occupancy and there have been break ins and people reportedly sleeping in here so it’s possible that smokers’ materials may have been the cause.”

Demolition of the structure is expected to begin next week and Anthony Haddad, director of development service for the City of Penticton said there have not been any plans submitted as yet for the property.

Penticton Fire Department was dispatched Log Cabin Motel just after 1 a.m. on Tuesday.

Deputy Dennis Smith said due to the amount of calls coming in about the fire to dispatch they deemed it a two alarm fire while enroute to building located at 3287 Skaha Lake Rd. Smith said when firefighters arrived the building was well involved and it was decided to call all shift crew and auxiliary staff in to fight the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

The fire was declared extinguished at 3:17 a.m. Smith said the investigation into the cause of the fire will continue this morning.
