Okanagan residents can get free legal advice from the annual Dial-a-lawyer day on Saturday put on by the BC branch of the Canadian Bar Association.

Twenty lawyers from across the province will volunteer their time to offer free 15-minute legal advice sessions by calling toll free 1-800-663-1919 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Kent Hurl, spokesperson for the BCCBA, said the calls will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis, and will address any issues in the following legal areas—family law, business, immigration, employment, wills and estates, and tort related to motor vehicles.

Hurl advises participants to have their questions written down to maximize the benefit of those 15 minutes. As well, lawyer referrals will be offered for a further free 30-minute meeting opportunity to answer more questions.

“At that point, you hopefully have the information needed to then to make a decision to pursue a matter further or not,” Hurl said.

The free legal advice opportunity is part of the Law Week across Canada events held to help inform Canadians about the vital role lawyers and the courts prove to guarantee and open, independent and unbiased judicial system.

This year will also draw attention to the 35th anniversary of the signing of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982.

Also taking place will be an open house at the Kelowna Courthouse on Saturday, April 29, starting at 10 a.m.

The activities planned include a mock trial where Superman will face charges, an RCMP vehicle on display and a community BBQ.

There will be similar open house events held at several courthouses across the province, with the Kelowna event representing the southern Interior region.
