It’s a day dedicated to apples.
The Grist Mill and Gardens is holding its annual Apple Day event on Sat., Oct. 14 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Come on out to the provincial historical site near Keremeos to taste samples from more than 100 varieties of heritage and non-market apples.
The Grist Mill is home to a variety of rare heritage apples and residents of the area donate from their own trees so the public can see and sample varietals no longer offered in the commercial market.
The extensive heritage apple display is organized by the Grist Mill Foundation. Anyone who has rare apples and wants to donate should contact the Grist Mill.
Throughout the day there are a variety of family-oriented harvest games including apple croquet, apple juggling and guess how many apples are the in the barrel to win a prize.
A highlight of the day for young and old is the apple race down Keremeos Creek. Apples are numbered and sent down the creek and the first one to pass the bridge is the winner.
And then of course there’s the apple pie baking contest at 1 p.m. Pies must be submitted to the pie judging tent by 1 p.m.
The Grist Mill restaurant will offer up some apple related grub including pulled pork sandwiches, apple coleslaw, apple baked goods, mulled apple cider and more.
The cost is $7 for an adult and $5 for a student or senior.
