Some budget changes aimed at supporting more students are looking for a passing grade in the Vernon School District.
The board of education is seeking public input on proposed changes for next school year’s district budget.
Trustees indicated priority be given to increasing education assistant support, increase school based resource teacher support, reduce wait times in psychological assessments and more counsellors.
They also look to increase reserves by reducing professional development expenses (such as attending conferences virtually), balancing the budget and rebuilding reserves.
“Ongoing cost pressures and the need to rebuild reserves limits opportunities to increase supports and make cost reductions necessary,” the report reads. “The superintendent’s recommendations therefore focused on preserving the supports prioritized by the board. Those recommendations reflect reductions in other costs to balance the budget.”
The district forecast an increase in enrolment of about 70 students for the 2024/2025 year.
