The city is cleaning up high traffic areas after a long dry spell has left a build up of grime.

City of Penticton CAO Peter Weeber said the hot, dry weather is great, but the dust and grime that usually washes away with a good rain is starting to accumulate. He said that is why contractors have been pressure washing high traffic areas around Penticton.

Cleaning and maintenance schedules for downtown and lakeshore are Monday to Friday. During this time the breezeways will be blown out and mopped, on Friday starting at 4 a.m. the sidewalks are blown off for all of Main Street (downtown) — the sweeper works with the two people blowing off sidewalks and cleans the street as it is being blown and Nanaimo Square will also be cleaned.

Spot cleanups will be done as requested and involves the use of blowers, mops and pressure washers.

Waterfront maintenance has occurred daily from June and runs through to the Labour Day weekend. This includes Thursday to Monday where staff walk along the waterfront from the SS Sicamous to Marina Way Beach picking up garbage, cigarette butts, collecting recycling, blowing sand off walkways and stairs and cleaning furniture as required. This will also be completed at Skaha and Sudbury beaches, alternating between the lakes depending on workload and special events.

Work started the week of Aug. 7 and will continue throughout the month.
