A new Naramata affordable rental housing development will be run by the non-profit group the Christopher Housing Society.

The Christopher Housing Society will be responsible for four apartments at 3320 3rd St. in Naramata. The four, one-bedroom units have vehicle parking spaces for one car per unit. The society to run it was selected as the result of a request for expression of interest proposal calls issued in January.

The apartments are being developed through the amended Canada-B.C. Affordable Housing Agreement, through joint contributions by the government of Canada through Canada’s Economic Action Plan and by the province under the Seniors’ Rental Housing initiative.

Incorporated in 1991, the Christopher Housing Society operates 42 units of affordable family housing with an on-site day care in Penticton and contributes to the oversight of 97 units of seniors’ housing in the community.

The Naramata Seniors Housing Society took on the initiative to build a quality structure and then attempted to buy adjoining land about six years ago. B.C. Housing ended up buying the property off the owner and built to their criteria opposed to the criteria of Seniors Housing Society.
