A group of four students from Summerland Secondary School are planning a special fundraiser to be held in late May.

They have the enthusiasm and the idea for their fundraising event. Now all they need is an organization to receive the money the hope to raise.

Ariana Planiden, Ethan Freistadt, Rachel Shanner and Aliya Van Bergeyk are leadership students at Summerland Secondary School.

They are participating in the Summerland Rotary Club’s $100 Challenge.

The challenge gives students $100 to use for fundraising to benefit the charity of their choice.

Planiden, Freistadt, Shanner and Van Bergeyk are planning a car wash event, but so far, they have not determined which organization will benefit from their efforts.

“We just want to help a charity in need,” Freistadt said.

The four are looking for a local organization, not a national or international charity, to receive the money they will raise.

The students said the fundraising work will also help to raise awareness of the charity and its works.

Planiden said the car wash was chosen since a similar event, held by a group of Summerland students last year, raised considerable money to help victims of the Fort McMurray fire in northern Alberta.

She said she would like the community to be involved in selecting the organization.

Those who are part of a community organization which could benefit from the money are asked to email arianaplaniden@gmail.com by April 28.

The students will then choose from the requests to determine which organization will benefit from their fundraising efforts.

Roch Fortin of the Summerland Rotary Club said the $100 Challenge brings together young people and charities and creates conversations.

“It’s a win-win for the organizations involved and for the community,” he said.
