The Town of Oliver has received the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).

The town’s annual finance report, created by the finance department, is the reason why they received this award. According to a release from GFOA, “the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting Program was established to encourage municipal governments throughout Canada to publish high-quality financial reports and to provide peer recognition and technical guidance for officials preparing these reports. Its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.”

According to the release, the report was “judged by impartial Canadian Review Committee members to ensure it met the high standards of the program, including demonstrating a constructive ‘spirit of full disclosure’ designed to clearly communicate the municipality’s financial story and to motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.”

“This is a significant accomplishment for the Town of Oliver and speaks to the work and dedication for the Town of Oliver staff,” said Oliver Mayor Martin Johansen. “It’s a good example of what can be accomplished by anybody that works hard and has full disclosure for the community as well. Let’s everyone know how things are going.”

Johansen said he and the rest of town council have a “budgeting process coming up, so this type of financial award gives him the confidence that the information coming from the finance department is high quality.”
