The snow is back

After days of brilliant sunshine, the cloud is moving in and snow is back in the forecast for this weekend.

“After being under the influence of this ridge of high pressure, we do see a shift take place on Friday and into the weekend,” says Environment Canada meteorologist Alyssa Charbonneau.

“We have cold arctic air that is right in place throughout the province and a low-pressure system is going to move into the South Coast and spread moisture into the Souther Interior of B.C. this weekend.”

Charbonneau says the region is forecast for flurries on Friday, with periods of snow on Saturday and Sunday.

“The flurries will likely linger into the beginning of next week as well,” adds Charbonneau.

The Okanagan-Shuswap can expect 2-4 centimetres of fresh powder on Saturday, followed by more than five centimetres on Sunday.

She adds that the South Okanagan may see slightly more snow as there is more moisture in the system from Penticton to the border.

“As this system comes in, it will help warm up the region a little bit,” says Charbonneau. “With the cloud cover, the overnight lows won't dip down as cold, but the cold air is still well in place. We are looking at daytime temperatures of -4 C and overnight lows of -7 or -8 C.”

As for the weeks to come, the groundhogs are unclear.

Ontario's Wiarton Willie and Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam failed to spot their shadows predicting an early spring,

Both contradicting Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil who saw its shadow, predicting more cold weather.

Despite the rodent's opinions, Environment Canada on the other hand believes winter is likely to be here a while longer.

“It does look like this weather will bring us closer to normal temperatures, but after that it is hard to pick out a trend,” says Charbonneau.

“There are some hints we might get cold again next week. For Feb. 2, I would never say winter is for sure over.”
