PARSONS, BARBARA

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Parsons on June 16, 2017.

Predeceased by her loving partner of 58 years, Doug, Barbara was a woman of great strength of character and integrity. She believed strongly in protecting the environment and community involvement, and she touched many lives while living in Penticton.

Barb was incredibly smart and continually tested herself with crosswords, puzzles, and watching Jeopardy. She would be most irritated when her standing date with Alex Trebek was pre-empted by some “damn sports broadcast!” She was an accomplished and published poet and author and her passions also included studying astronomy, archaeology and ancient civilizations. She also loved to travel and enjoyed many adventures with her dear friend Joyce.

She was a dedicated volunteer and worked with the Grandmothers of Africa fundraising for the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s work that provides African grandmothers and the children in their care with the necessities of life. She also taught ESL and adjustment skills to new immigrants to the Okanagan Valley.

She will be truly missed by her loving family, daughters Leslie (Dante), Deborah (Doug), Sandra (Rob) and dedicated son Mike; and adored by her granddaughters Danica, Devon, Lia, Virginia, and Emily.

In honour of mom’s belief in continuing education, the family will establish a one-time Barbara Parsons Education Bursary at Penticton High School. In lieu of flowers, contributions to a charity of one’s own choice is preferred.
