IVAN CHARLES MESSMER

July 23, 1931 - March 8, 2015

Ivan passed away peacefully at his home in Penticton at the age of 83. He is predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Marge. He is survived by his two daughters and their families; Susan Strohmann (Rob), Cindy Lewthwaite (Don), five grandchildren, Matthew, Jenna, Marcus, Charlie and Charlotte, and two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Oliver. He also leaves behind his partner and companion of the last 11 years, Lillian Carlson.

Ivan moved to Penticton in 1967 with his family from Barrhead, Alberta. Messmer Construction built many houses and duplexes in the Summerland area as well as building and owning Peacock’s Perch Pub in Summerland. He was also an active business man in Alberta and as far away as Molokai, Hawaii. Ivan was the Mayor of Penticton from 1980 – 1986. He continued his political career representing the riding of Boundary Similkameen as an MLA from 1986 – 1991. During his term, he held several key portfolios including Minister of Parks and Solicitor-General. He retired from politics and went on to enjoy camping, golfing, wintering in San Diego, spending time with friends and cooking for family gatherings. Ivan was known for his great sense of humour and the twinkle in his eye. He loved to debate any topic and usually had you agreeing with his point of view. He will be missed terribly by his family and friends. We will always treasure our memories. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church, 150 Orchard Avenue, Penticton, B.C. with a reception to follow.
