John passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, January 1, 2017 at Haven Hill Retirement Centre, Penticton. He is survived by his daughters, Susan Gawne and Zelia (Nick) Yazlovasky; grandchildren, Adam (Tanya), Kimberlee (Brant), Jessica (Cory) and Nicole (Dylan); great grandchildren, Duncan, Chase, Logan and Gunner and sister, Alvarina. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Alice and brothers, Manuel and Fernando. Born in Sao Jorge, Azores, he and Alice emmigrated to Canada together in 1957. He worked in farming of one kind or another all his life and ran his own orchard, including growing grapes and making wine as well as working with cattle and sheep. As a hard worker and determined provider for his family, he began work at light and didn’t finish until dark. He sat as a director on the Naramata Co-op for many years, was active in the Snowtracker Snowmobile Club, enjoyed square-dancing with Alice and loved travelling to the ocean whether it be to California or Azores. A Funeral Mass will take place at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 1296 Main St., Penticton, Tuesday, January 10 at 11:00 a.m. with reception to follow. Viewing will take place from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will take place 10:00 a.m. the following morning at Lakeview Cemetery, Penticton.
