1928 - 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved mother, wife, grandmother and friend. Maria do Ceu Antunes Marcos passed away peacefully on September 1, 2016 at the age of 88.

Maria was born on January 11, 1928 in Casegas, Portugal. She was the eldest of three siblings. After losing her mother at a very young age, Maria spent her time helping to take care of her family’s farm, her ailing father and her brother and sister. In 1950 she married the love of her life, Antonio (Tony) Marcos. In 1952 they had a daughter named Maria. In order to improve the life of his young family, Antonio left for Canada in 1953. Maria and her daughter followed in 1961, immigrating to Kitimat, BC where the family was reunited.

Maria integrated into her new life, taking care of her family while teaching herself English by watching TV and reading magazines. She also had to learn how to drive. In April of 1976, she moved with her family to Penticton where they purchased the Lakeland Motel. Maria spent the first two years working at the motel as well as working briefly at the packing-house in Naramata. In 1986 she moved with her husband to Kaleden. Family was very important to Maria and she treasured the opportunity to help raise her grandchildren.

Maria was very passionate about sewing, as a talented seamstress she was able to design and make clothing for herself, and her family. Although very soft spoken, Maria loved to sing. She excelled in cooking and baking, the love of which she passed on to her daughter. Maria had an amazing green thumb and could always be found in her backyard enjoying her garden, which was the envy of all her neighbors. She travelled all over Europe gaining a true appreciation for European history.

Maria will be missed immensely. She was predeceased by her brother, Jose Dias and husband, Antonio Marcos. She is survived by her daughter, Maria (Domingos) Pereira; granddaughter, Jenney (Dany) Jankowski; grandson, Marcos Pereira; and sister, Delfina Antunes Pereira who still resides in Casegas, Portugal.

Our family would like to send a very special thank you to all the amazing staff at Trinity Care Centre for the wonderful care and support provided to Maria and our family during her stay there.

A Funeral Mass will take place Saturday, September 10, 2016 - 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 1296 Main Street, Penticton followed by interment at Lakeview Cemetery Penticton. Prayer service will be held Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.
