Letter: Claiming a new identity

PFLAG Canada provides support to persons of all sexual attraction and gender expression

What is Transgender?

I have learned that it is not a matter of somebody “deciding” that they want to “become” a member of the opposite sex. Rather, it is a deep issue of personal identity, and a difficult journey to a different, more congruent way of being. Claiming a new identity can lead to verbal or physical abuse. The support of family and friends is critical.

PFLAG Canada provides support to persons of all sexual attraction and gender expression. Our next meeting is 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 23, at Oasis United Church, 2964 Skaha Lake Rd. We will watch a powerful documentary of transition from female to male by Danie Easton, To Be a MAN: under the skin of Levi Nathan Hansinger. Levi went to school in Penticton, and his mother, Gina, will be present to elaborate on Levi’s journey.

We hope to provide a safe space for all, and invite supportive individuals to visit. For further information, contact me at 250-493-5530.
