Letter: Eliminate the ‘glaring’ electric sign at the entrance to Penticton

Street billboards are affront to the senses

Editor:

In regard to the news about “residents invited to reimagine city at north entrance” printed on page A12 April 28th. I say get rid of that huge, ugly, glaring, electric sign at the north end of the city by the bridge.

You can see it all the way from Naramata day or night. We come from Summerland. One of us goes by that horrifying sign almost every day. It is bad enough that we have to look at the wooden signs that cheapen the beauty of Penticton and its natural surroundings but to see the waste of energy supported by the city council and wealthy advertisers is an affront to the senses. Solution: Advertise in the newspapers like everyone else.

Council has the power to create a level playing field for every business in Penticton and surrounding yet they pander to these ones for tax money. Everyone knows what Kelowna looks like as they head north toward the bridge, right? Is that what we want? Is council trying to turn the north end into another Kelowna with highrises too?

And the sprawl begins. So much for discretion. Penticton is a wonderful, beautiful place. Let’s keep it that way please.
