Letter: Mandatory breathalyzer an invasion of your privacy

Does anyone really want this type of invasion of your privacy to continue?

Penticton Western News letters to the editor.

People on social media keep telling me to do my homework before posting anything, so here goes.

Here’s a little tidbit of information I dug up from Google: “A referendum is required before the legislative assembly votes on a resolution (bill) that authorizes an amendment to Canada’s constitution.” I don’t remember ever voting on the issue of mandatory breathalyzer testing; does anyone else remember any kind of referendum last summer or ever, for that matter?

This is an issue that affects all Canadians, therefore, it should have been up to the Canadian people to decide, not the authorities. They did not hold a referendum, because they knew it would be soundly defeated, so they threw the rule book out the window.

This is nothing more than all Canadians being punished for the acts of a few to pander to a special interest group (MADD) in the hopes of winning votes.

Distracted driving is a bigger killer than alcohol and drugs. The next step will be that you have to give up your phone at a road block to make sure you haven’t been texting. Then they will be able to view your private conversations.

Does anyone really want this type of invasion of your privacy to continue? I think all of us should seriously ponder what is really going on here, and nip it in the bud before we have no rights left. Whatever it takes to stop the Big Brother attitude, we need to do it.

One of my favourite quotes is: “I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees.” I’m prepared to fight this any way I can.
