Mustangs finish second in Vernon tournament
The Princess Margaret Mustangs came up short in the final of the Fulton senior girls’ basketball tournament last weekend.
The Mustangs dropped a hard-fought 58-53 decision to Williams Lake. The Mustangs made only six of 24 free throws in the final and shot 23 per cent from the floor. Dana Klamut led the way with 16 points, while Brooklyn Pichette had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Kari-Grace Pym contributed nine points, 17 rebounds and nine steals.
Callan Cooper was named to the all-star team and Pym was recognized as the top defensive player.
The Mustangs opened the tournament by stampeding over Valleyview of Kamloops 59 – 30. Pichette led with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Cooper added 12 points, Pym 10 points while Maddie Winter and Klamut chipped in eight each. In the semi-finals, the Mustangs allowed Kalamalka of Vernon to build a 34-20 lead at half-time before outscoring the Lakers 28-6 in the last quarter to pull away with a 62-51 win. Klamut knocked down 20 points with Cooper adding 16 and Pym 11.
The Mustangs host Princeton at 5 p.m. on Wednesday before departing for the Sa-Hali tournament in Kamloops this weekend. This tournament will feature many of the top AA teams in the province and will be the Mustangs most important of the season leading up to their play-offs.
