Lakers field lacrosse underperforms at provincials

The Pen High Lakers field lacrosse team ended provincials with a 13-1 victory over Sardis.

The Pen High Lakers field lacrosse team ended the 2017 Field Lacrosse Provincial championship on a high.

The Lakers earned a 13-1 victory over Sardis in New Westminster. The Lakers, sponsored by Underwriter’s Insurance, opened with a 5-4 loss to Nanaimo, then lost 9-4 to St. Thomas More.

Against Nanaimo, Nash Moog scored twice, while Kale Lawrence and Ben Olsen added the other goals.

Lakers coach Tony Ramsay said their performance on opening day hurt the team and didn’t allow them to advance to the final eight.

“Bottom line they didn’t play to their full potential,” said Ramsay.

In a 9-4 loss, Keegan Allen led with two, while Lawrence and Rhys MacDonald also scored. Against Sardis, Beau Chetner led with three goals, while Olsen, MacDonald and Logan Cote scored twice. Allen, Lawrence, Moog and Carson Shortreed scored once.

The Lakers victory came against what Ramsay said is a first-year team.

Ramsay praised Trenton Henson for playing a game in goal and Ethan Konno for stepping up as a backup goalie and performing very well. He also liked how Jackson Jamieson, Cole Hennig, Freddy Harbinson, Aidan Danby and Matt Carson played defensively.

“I think it was a good season,” said Ramsay. “We finished on a sour note. I was very happy with the way some of our junior players advanced with their skills and confidence. Looking to next year, I guess we can only get better.”

Ramsay also gave kudos to Neil Jamieson of Underwriters Insurance for his invaluable support as well as Pam MacDonald and other key people who supported the Lakers behind the scenes.
