OHA female prep undefeated in CSSHL playoffs

The Okanagan Hockey Academy Female Prep team is 3-0 in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League Female Championships, which started on March 1.

Sydney Carter (Kamloops) stopped all 26 shots she faced as the OHA blanked the Notre Dame Hounds 4-0.

Sophie Shirley (Saskatoon), Nara Elia (Penticton), Sophie Lalor (Penticton) and Anna MacCara (Yellowknife) provided the offence. Victoria Bourassa (Regina) made 30 saves in the Notre Dame crease. The OHA had improved to 2-0 with a 2-1 win over Edge School. Olivia Knowles (Campbell River) scored the shootout winner. The teams battled to scoreless first and third periods. Alex Gulstene (Vancouver) stopped 31-of-32 shots in the Okanagan crease, while Emily Severson (Calgary, Alta.) made 38 saves for Edge.

The OHA opened the championship with a 2-1 win over St. Mary’s Academy.

Two goals off the stick of Shirley in the span of 20 seconds lifted the OHA to victory. Gulstene finished the game with 19 saves. Holly Reuther (Winnipeg) scored the lone goal for St. Mary’s, while Logan Angers (Winnipeg) stopped 19-of-21 between the pipes.

The OHA is back in action today at 12:15 p.m. against Pursuit of Excellence and wraps up its round robin schedule March 4, also at 12:15 p.m. against Northern Alberta.

Female Varsity

A three-goal third period propelled the Banff Hockey Academy (1-0-0) to a 3-1 win over the Okanagan Hockey Academy (0-2-0).

Annah Setter (Golden) scored the go-ahead goal with 2:41 remaining, while Hannah Nordli (Nanaimo) added an insurance marker just over a minute later. Jessica Martens (Cochrane) also found the back of the net for Banff, which got 19 saves from goaltender Kayla Savoie-Penton (Calgary). Brenna Hannon (Penticton) scored the lone goal for Okanagan, which got 28 saves from goaltender Reid Bahr (Okotoks).

The OHA opened the championship with an 8-0 loss to Shawnigan Lake School. Gillian Moore (Merritt) scored twice and setup two more. Marissa Ryalls (Brentwood Bay) and Ashley McCabe (Lilloeet) also found the back of the net twice, while Kiera Stecko (Kelowna) stopped all 13 shots she faced. Saige Brimacombe (Duncan) and Julianne Nelson (Kelowna) each finished with a goal and two helpers to round out the scoring. Bahr made 39 saves in the loss.

The CSSHL announced the finalists for the annual league awards in the Female Prep Division and Female Varsity Division.

Award winners will be announced at a ceremony on March 4 during the 2017 CSSHL Female Championships at Edge School in Calgary, Alta.

The All-Academic Teams for each division will also be announced during the awards ceremony, along with the Top Scorer Award.
