Mickella Biggs said rope jumping can be challenging.

Biggs, a member of Penticton’s Black Widow Rope Spinners and the B.C. All-Stars, said it is also rewarding, especially when there is a crowd.

She and seven other members of the B.C. All-Stars and Black Widow Rope Spinners put on a community show at Princess Margaret on March 4. Their biggest fundraiser attracted a crowd of approximately 150 people, which generated nearly $2,400, that is divided among the rope spinners for future events.

“I was super impressed. I thought there was a lot more people than we’ve had in the past,” said Biggs, who graduates from Princess Margaret this year. “That really helps us as this is our main fundraiser before any competition, such as provincials.”

Biggs said performing in front of family and friends makes for a good experience. What Biggs enjoyed about her last community show was being joined by the visiting All-Stars from Nelson.

“I think it was nice that we had some out-of-town jumpers to have a variety of tricks,” said Biggs, who has competed on the provincial and national stage. “Different things that they can show. As a whole it went pretty well. Our hard work paid off.”

The jumpers received much warm applause from the crowd. Biggs enjoyed doing her final show at her school.

“It’s kind of one of my last memories here for skipping and school,” she said.

Cathy Cunningham, coach of the Black Widow Rope Spinners and committee member on the B.C. All-Stars, was impressed how the kids worked together and supported each other.

“They had a lot of fun and were disciplined,” she said. “They have built performance skills and learned to respond and interact with the audience.”

Included in the performance was a light show, with the jumpers using ropes that had LED lights.

“The rope is the focus and adds another level and challenge,” said Cunningham, who received positive feedback from the crowd saying it was one of the best community shows they had attended.

Next for the Black Widow Rope Spinners is preparing for provincials at the end of April. The Black Widow Rope Spinners are always looking for new jumpers. Anyone interested can contact Cunningham at c.cunningham@shaw.ca. If those who attended the show on Saturday are interested in donating more to the jumpers, they can do so by contacting Cunningham.
