The Pen High Lakers capped their junior girls basketball season with a 53-51 loss to Royal Bay.

The Lakers finished 14th at the Telus Junior Girls Basketball provincial championships in Langley March 1 to 4.

Jennifer Hayman led with 13 points against Royal Bay (Colwood in Victoria) and added eight rebounds to earn player of the game. Kali Loewen and Kalli Doell chipped in nine and eight points, respectively.

“Over four games, we averaged 25 turnovers and shot 26 per cent from the field and 35 per cent from the free throw line,” said Lakers coach Chris Terris. “At this level, it’s tough to win games with those numbers.

“The provincial field was incredibly well-balanced,” he continued. “After losing our first game, we still played teams ranked three, four and seventh in the draw. Every game was a quality opponent.”

The Lakers finished the season with a 26-8 record.

“The girls had a fabulous year. It’s easy to lose sight of that when you finish the year on an underwhelming note,” said Terris. “We just lost our rhythm offensively at the wrong time of year.”

The Lakers opened provincials with a 61-47 loss to Panorama Ridge. Emma Terris was the player of the game with 11 points and three steals.

“We got off to a great start, leading 13-2 after the first quarter, but we blew our assignments at the defensive end too many times and let them back into the game,” he said.

Down 37-32 after thre quarters, Terris said they gave up 18 points in the second quarter and 24 in the fourth.

“We had a game plan to take their best two kids out of the game and force others to beat us,” said Terris. “We executed very well for two quarters, but we fell asleep a key times and to their credit, when we lost them, they hit shots.”

Against Whistler, the Lakers lost 39-28. Olivia Devito was named player of the game after putting up nine points with two boards. Haymen led the team with 11 boards. The Lakers earned their lone win against Langley Christian, 45-38. Doell was named player of the game with 12 points and seven steals.
