Former Vee Hengen joins coaching staff

The Penticton Vees have restructured the executive coaching staff.

Returning for his fourth year with the Vees is assistant coach David Small, who will now be assuming the role of director of hockey operations within his current responsibilities. Dave will focus his attention on video breakdown, team camps and club logistics this season.

Joining the program as an assistant coach is Vees alumni Michael Hengen. At the commencement of his five-year junior career with the Vees, Hengen was a member of the 2007/2008 Fred Page Cup Championship squad. Michael has spent the past two seasons playing pro hockey in Germany and is thrilled to be joining the coaching ranks. Michael will be responsible for directing and developing the defence.

Steve Cawley is another new addition to the staff. A graduate of McGill University, Cawlay will focus his attention as the academic and mentorship liaison, while also assisting with statistical breakdown for the club.

Matt Sells will join the organization as a video technician. Sells will assist the coaching staff in preparation for opponents and breaking down previous game action.

Mike Needham and Ed Lebler will be returning in the capacity of team consultants.

“I’m excited about the number of quality individuals that we have on the staff,” said Vees head coach-general manager Fred Harbinson. “Our depth allows us the opportunity for coaches to specialize in their areas of expertise. We’re stronger as an organization both on and off the ice moving forward.”
