Leo Fitzgerald pounced on a rebound and chipped it over Penticton Vees goalie Chad Katunar to give the Victoria Grizzlies a 3-2 double overtime.
Goals by Wade Murphy and Jordan McCallum had the Vees ahead 2-1 entering the third period. The lead was erased early in the period when the puck ricocheted off the boards in the South Okanagan Events Centre on a strange angle and ended up near the Vees net. Despite the efforts of Katunar to scramble to his crease and the defence to keep it out, Brett Hartskamp buried the equalizer.
In second extra period, Myles Fitzgerald was stopped on his wrap around attempt but his brother Leo able to grab the loose puck and silencing the crowd of 1,691. Katunar stopped 27 of 30 shots, a few of them key saves, while Grizzlies goalie Michael Stiliadis stopped 28 for the win.
On Friday, the Vees defeated the West Kelowna Warriors 4-1.
Michael Rebry and Brad McClure provided the offence for the Vees against the West Kelowna Warriors Friday night, while netminder Chad Katunar turned aside 32 shots. Katunar had a shutout with under three minutes remaining until Seb Lloyd broke it following a nice passing play by Marcus Basara that was started on a broken play that hit the leg of a Vees player. While the Warriors created several good chances, Katunar made several key saves for the Vees. Ryan Gropp, Wade Murphy and Louie Nanne all collected two assists. Katunar was named the game's second star.
