Eight teams are battling to be crowned the first-ever champions of beach volleyball at the Penticton Peach Festival this weekend, all in the name of a good cause.

Participants arrived at Skaha Lake Beach Friday morning to kick off the inaugural edition of the tournament, courtesy of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Penticton.

With the playoff rounds underway, as of Saturday afternoon, there’s still time for people to get involved and help raise money for JCI Penticton and the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program.

“We have silent auctions going on, so people can still stop by, and win some prizes,” said Harpreet Sidhu, a JCI Penticton alumni.

The first-ever beach volleyball tournament at Peach Fest makes use of Skaha Lake Beach, as opposed to the festival’s usual home, Okanagan Lake Park.

“It’s something new to try as an event at Peach Fest,” Sidhu added. “Also, to utilize the space over at Skaha I think is very important so there can be events all around the city.”

Along with the games and silent auction, people are also invited to enjoy the event’s beverage garden.

Though Sidhu said it’s too early to determine how the money will be put back into the community, she’s optimistic the inaugural event will prove to be a success.

“It’s going well, and there’s still plenty of time for people to enjoy the games,” she said. “We’ll be looking at ways to expand the tournament even more next year.”
