It’s almost time to wish the Town of Oliver a happy 100th birthday.
For the community’s centennial, the Oliver and District Heritage Society and the Oliver Parks and Recreation Society are putting out a call to artists in the community.
The societies, along with their partners in the Oliver Tourism Association, Oliver Community Arts Council, Venables Theatre, Osoyoos Indian Band and the Town of Oliver are looking for submissions for a design and logo that would be used for the One Hundred X One Hundred (x̌cəcikst X x̌cəcikst in the traditional Syilx language) project to celebrate the community’s history.
That art should reflect the history of the community, acknowledges the land and water on which we live, work and play, and inspire a stronger community and future.
Key themes or words brought forward through community engagement to date include the Okanagan River, the land, sockeye salmon, bighorn sheep, California quail, agriculture, ranching, the Valley, desert grasslands, Nylintin (McIntyre Bluff), mountains, lakes, Ponderosa pine, orchards, wineries, sagebrush, bitterroot, Saskatoon berry, the sun and the dry hot climate.
Simple designs with few elements, strong lines and bold colours are recommended. Keep in mind the design needs to work in a small format, such as a poster logo or a badge. Designs that incorporate the text “100 x 100” or “One Hundred X One Hundred” are welcomed, but not required.
The artwork is required to be submitted before Feb. 5 to be considered as the primary design for the project.
Art can be mailed to the One Hundred X One Hundred Committee
c/o Oliver Parks and Recreation
PO Box 627, Oliver BC V0H 1T0
Art can also be emailed to email@example.com with 100X100 Project Design in the subject line, or dropped off in-person at Oliver Parks and Recreation Administration Office at 6359 Park Dr. in the Community Centre from Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
In all cases, artists are asked to include their contact information including name, email address and phone number for follow-up by the Committee.
The artist or artists whose work is chosen by the committee to be used as the project design will be acknowledged in the media and future promotions and receive a $250 honorarium and framed copy of the final design.
That history, stretching provides an opportunity to explore our roots and share wisdom to build a stronger shared community, a deeper connection to the land, and to grow our future together for generations to follow.
