Carmi Elementary’s grade 4/5 class raised $531 for the Red Cross in response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

Students, led by teacher Ms. Kristy Husel, organized a bottle drive in the one week leading up to spring break.

“My students wanted to do something helpful, as we were discussing the conflicts going on in the Ukraine,” said Husel.

The class decided on a bottle drive. A mass email was sent out to families of students in the school and that’s where everyone wanted to help.

“We were so lucky to have received an overwhelming amount of recyclables from them. We were only accepting recyclables for one week, and we had multiple bags of empties showing up every single day,” Husel added.

“It was an amazing initiative from the kids to do something kind for people they don’t know. A few of the parents even offered their time and vehicles to help transport the empties to the bottle depot. We never thought we would make over $500 for the Red Cross.

Husel said she is grateful to the families and school staff who made the one week fundraiser such a success.

“I’m extremely proud of my students and their hard work to make this bottle drive a success,” said Husel.
