Several hours of local kids' hard work were on display Saturday, as the 2nd Penticton Scouts held its annual "Kub Kar Race."
Beavers and Cub scout groups raced their own creations on Feb. 1, at the Concordia Lutheran Church.
Starting with a wood block and mini wheels, kids from the ages of five to 10 completed crafting their cars and watched them hit the track as they vied for prizes in four categories: fastest car, creativity, most wins, and enthusiasm.
"The kids take care, pride, and ownership in what they make," said Nick Heinrick, club leader at 2nd Penticton Scouts.
Among the many rules of Saturday's event included creating an item that weighed no more than 142 grams, Heinrick added.
The "Kub Kar Race" is one 2nd Penticton Scouts' flagship events every year. The group represents the last remaining scout club in the city.
After 17 Beaver scouts (Kindergarten to Grade 2) raced their mini cars, another 15 Cub scouts (Grade 3 to 5) took to the track. Around 25 sets of races proceeded, with kids counting down from three each time.
"At this age, they don't get enough opportunity to really build something themselves to be proud of and have that ownership," Heinrick said.
"It's something they always get excited for."
