One of Keremeos’ Community Garden Elf’s has set up a fundraiser to help the garden’s main caretaker get a new set of wheels.

Russ Hatt set up the GoFundMe to raise enough money to replace Albert McCormick’s old motorized wheelchair after its engines burned out.

“It’s more than just a garden, it brings people together,” Hatt said. “I know a lot of people in the community, they’re all 100 per cent behind it.”

The fundraiser is targeting a goal of $18,000, enough to purchase a used John Deere Gator, which would be used for the main service vehicle for the garden and transportation for McCormick off of hard, flat surfaces.

McCormick’s old wheelchair burned out in part from the many hours that it was used out in the garden, where he had even built and rigged up a harrow that could be attached behind it to work the ground ahead of planting.

“There’s so much hurt out there, it would be nice to emphasize this really good thing,” said Hatt. “The next few months there’s going to be a lot going on there.”

The expanded garden across from the Ambrosia housing development is under work ahead of the spring planting season, even as McCormick’s smaller garden next door to his home brings in people from across the valley and beyond.
