Go bags, wildfire safety, animal emergency response and more to learn in Oliver

Oliver Fire Department kicks off Emergency Preparedness Week on Saturday

Help your family become better prepared for an emergency with the Oliver Fire Department on Saturday as they kick off Emergency Preparedness Week.

The fire department has also invited the Oliver/Osoyoos Search and Rescue to teach the public about trip preparedness, adventure smart and are open for any general questions that you have. They will also be bringing their newest member of the team, a Search Dog in Training who will be available for a meet and greet.

Argon Solar & Electrical will be there talking about backup power and other energy options. Munckhof Mfg will be showcasing their “1st Out unit” which is a high pressure, low volume system designed as a versatile tool for initial attacks, brush fires, lightning strikes and patrolling hot spots.

Emergency Social Services will teach the public about go-bags and some key items that you need within the first 24 hours of an emergency along with details on what they do in the community and how you can volunteer. The Oliver Amateur Radio Club will teach you about HAM radios, how to join and learn how to operate them and how you can obtain your Federal Radio License.

BC Ambulance Service are going to be showing the basics on tending to minor wounds, tourniquet use, bandage applications and the importance of medical kits in your go bags. FireSmart Canada will be handing out information on how you can better prepare your home in the event of a fire and teaching you about ember ignitions.

Animal Lifeline Emergency Response Team Society volunteers respond to disasters and emergencies when domestic animals are in need of rescue and sheltering. They will be there to give you advice on preparing your pets in an emergency event and how you can volunteer.

Oliver Fire Department will be teaching the public about fire guards and showing you the different types of equipment they use during a wildfire event.

Join all these groups at the Oliver Fire Department on May 4 between 9:30 a.m. and noon.

The Oliver Fire Department has also arranged for the Oliver Theatre to play the movie Planes: Fire & Rescue and has covered the entire entry cost for the show.

There are 290 free tickets available for collection at the Oliver Fire Hall during the event until 11:15 a.m. These tickets are on a first come first serve basis and cannot be reserved. The move starts at 11:30 a.m.
