Healthy Heart Clinic hosted in Penticton

London Drugs holding clinic to assess likelihood of heart disease.

A Healthy Heart Clinic is being hosted by Penticton London Drugs to assess the likelihood of developing one of the leading causes of death in the country.

According to recent statistics made available by the Government of Canada, more than 1.37 million Canadians have heart disease. It claims more than 49,000 lives per year and is one of the leading causes of death in Canada. For patients who run the risk, or have already been diagnosed with heart disease, they may want to look further into their heart health. The Patient Care Pharmacist’s at London Drugs are certified to give the proper guidance to patients while assisting in the management of their health at the Healthy Heart Clinics.

The Government of Canada estimates that nine in 10 Canadians over the age of 20 have at least one risk factor for heart disease. The risk is higher for people that have a known family history of heart attacks, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure. The risk of developing heart disease also increases with age. Men over the age of 45 and women who have been through menopause and are over the age of 55 run the highest risks of developing heart disease. Ethnic groups such as Aboriginals or South Asians have an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. It is a common misconception that heart disease is just one condition. In fact, there are many root causes that affect the structure and functions of the heart.

To reduce the risks of heart disease, London Drugs Patient Care Pharmacist’s will go through your risk factors and suggest healthier options at your Healthy Heart Clinic. Simple lifestyle changes suggested include:

•    Be smoke-free

•    Be physically active

•    Know and control your blood pressure

•    Eat a healthy diet that is lower in fat, especially saturated and trans fat

•    Achieve and maintain a healthy weight

•    Manage your diabetes

•    Limit alcohol use

•    Reduce stress

In order to find out how you can reduce the risk of heart disease, visit the Healthy Heart Clinics hosted by London Drugs. The Patient Care Pharmacist’s are certified to assess the likelihood of developing heart disease. Through a 45-minute one-on-one consultation, the Patient Care Pharmacists will discover the factors that put you at risk and discuss how to minimize these risks.
