Used motor oil, oil filters and anti-freeze can now be dropped off at the Keremeos Waste Transfer Station, as well as the Oliver Landfill.
New modified shipping containers, supplied by the BC Used Oil Management Association, allow for spill-free and secure storage of these forms of solid waste.
The containers were added alongside several more upgrades at each transfer station.
In Keremeos, the transfer station’s scale house has been upgraded, and a new container has been added for disposal of residential paper and cardboard, residential batteries, electronics, lights and smoke alarms.
“The dedication of the current site as a Solid Waste Management/Transfer Station will ensure residents of Lower Similkameen will have an environmentally safe facility that will meet their solid waste disposal needs now, and into the future,” reads a release by the Regional District of Okangan Similkameen, Sept. 17.

As this landfill no longer buries waste (since 2007), the RDOS says they are working to develop a closure plan for the portion of the property where waste used to be buried.
In Oliver, upgrades include a new entrance configuration, an upgraded 80-foot scale, a new scale house and new alignment of recycling containers to RecycleBC.
Each landfill has limited storage of used oil; 20 litres of used oil per vehicle, per day. The RDOS recommended individuals dispose of larger volumes of used oil at Jiffy Lube in Penticton, and the T2 Bottle Depot in Oliver.
The Keremeos transfer station is currently open Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and seasonally (March to November) on Wednesday noon to 4 p.m. The Oliver Landfill is open 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Used oil and anti-freeze is only accepted Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
