The Grand Chancellor of the Fraternal Order of the Knights of Pythias of B.C., Don Helliwell of Victoria, is paying an official visit to Penticton Lodge #49 in November.

Local members will meet Helliwell at a supper at the Sandman Hotel on Nov. 5, and Chancellor Commander Edwin Cale will chair a business meeting afterwards.

The Knights of Pythias was founded in 1864, and the Penticton Lodge is in its 107th year as a member of the community. The local lodge has supported causes including the Okanagan Similkameen Neurological Society and the Alzheimer’s Walk for Memories.

Helliwell’s approach to living out the principles of the order – friendship, charity, and benevolence – includes support for the youth sponsored poster contest, a program to support the Golden Spur awards to recognize exemplary service, and his ideas for helping weaker lodges.

The Penticton lodge established a reputation within the order for its dedicated members. Over its 107-year history, six members of the Penticton lodge have served as grand chancellors and current Penticton lodge secretary Marv Wilson was recognized with grand chancellor honours for his 21 years of service as grand secretary.

If you are interested in finding out more about the local lodge of the Knights of Pythias, an information table will be set up in Cherry Lane Mall next to Save-On-Foods on Nov. 8 and 9.
