Penticton’s Junior Chamber International (JCI) group and BRODO Kitchen are working together to support the South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS), starting Feb. 3.
Participants of the Community Spoons project are invited to come down to BRODO on Penticton’s Main Street to sharpen their skills and make some delicious meals for the women and children at SOWINS.
The first Community Spoons will be held at 5:30 p.m on Monday, Feb. 3, at 483 Main St., and on the first Monday of every month until June.
“We’re thrilled that JCI is creating this new amazing opportunity that will help us provide not only nutritious soups to the women and children,” said Debbie Scarborough, executive director of SOWINS.
“The women and children know that there are people out there supporting them in living a life free of violence and fear. On behalf of all those we serve, SOWINS extends a huge thank you.”
The monthly event follows on the success of the Soup Sisters events BRODO has hosted. The Soup Sisters events invited the community to help make soups for SOWINS previously.

“Our passion is pleasing palates, and we look forward to welcoming JCI and Community Spoons in our space to cook up some delicious options,” said BRODO’s chef Paul Cecconi.
Cecconi, a renowned local chef, is creating three different recipes with his team that will be easy for guest chefs to cook together.
Each night of the Community Spoons will include appetizers, local wine, soup, and salad for the guest cooks to enjoy while BRODO’s staff show them the ropes in the kitchen. The cost is $50 per person to cover supplies and ingredients. Group rates can also be arranged in advance.

“Community Spoons is tangible evidence for the women and children that they are worthy of care and empathy, and warm soup helps to contradict the negative messages they are given in their abusive situations.
