Penticton is going the extra mile to honour all of the individuals who volunteer in this community.

Mayor John Vassilaki officially declared April 24 to 30 National Volunteer Week in Penticton during city council’s regular meeting on Tuesday, April 5.

The celebration of the people who represent “an essential” part of the community will be headlined by a special pancake breakfast on April 30 at the city’s Gyro Park.

Leaders from the South Okanagan-Similkameen (SOS) Volunteer Centre stood before council on Tuesday to highlight National Volunteer Week, a yearly celebration recognized across Canada and its 200 volunteers centres.

Subrina Monteith and Michael Magnusson spoke on behalf of the 1,000 registered volunteers at the Penticton-based centre, asking the mayor and council to proclaim the last week of April as one “for volunteerism.”

“Volunteers in Penticton mentor our children, support those feeling isolated, beautify our green spaces and fundraise for charitable organizations,” Vassilaki read in his proclamation.

“I urge my fellow citizens to recognize the crucial role played by volunteers in our community.”

The breakfast, courtesy of Penticton’s Total Restoration, will feature activities for people of ages. Monteith and Magnusson said the event is currently looking for volunteers.

Both individuals were named to the SOS leadership group in late January. Monteith, in particular, currently sits as the RDOS director for Kaleden and was instrumental in ensuring safety improvements were implemented at the dangerous corridor of Highway 97 and 3A.
