Meet Your Farmer: Hands & Hearts Acres

This week, a look at the Hands & Hearts Acres farm from Cawston, BC

Every week this summer the Penticton Western News is taking a look at one of the many incredible farmers and vendors that make the Penticton Farmers Market a go-to destination.

The Hands & Hearts Acres farm is a new sight at the Penticton Farmers’ Market this year. Rob Holland owns the farm and works on it together with his wife.

“This is our first real year of farming,” said Holland. “We did the cliche thing and quit our jobs and moved out to the country and we started a farm. Last year we started in May and went from there, but this is our first real go for it year.”

For Holland, becoming a farmer was all about the food, and getting closer to it. That closeness farmers have with their produce was something he felt was lacking in his previous job.

“I used to be a chef in my previous employ, and we were missing the link in the food chain. Where you’re promoting, but not selling or buying local food, it’s kind of a lie. I wanted a deeper connection to the food.”

Though this is Holland’s first real year of farming, the farm is producing a wide variety of crops.

“So far people recognize us for our radishes,” said Holland. “We have a couple different kinds. We grow about 40 different varieties of veg basically; we’ve got lots of different cabbage, carrots, beets, different types of greens, peppers, tomatoes, tomatillos, squash, I could keep going.”

Hands & Hearts Acres is one of many different farms and craft vendors that take part in the Penticton Farmers’ Market. Look for them, and the other farmers featured in previous Meet Your Farmers, every Saturday in downtown Penticton.
