The Miss Penticton Society is holding info session Jan. 11

The Miss Penticton Society is looking for candidates for Penticton’s 2022 Royalty.

Girls in Grades 10 to 12 can apply and a candidates information session runs Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Penticton Community Centre meeting room.

This is a historic program and a great opportunity for the youth of this community to learn life and communication skills.

The Miss Penticton pageant is usually held in August to coincide with Peachfest, where the newly crowned Miss Penticton and her Royalty take part in the Grand Parade.

2020 was a tough year for Miss Penticton Royalty. They didn’t get to fulfill many of their regular ambassador duties due to events being cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Miss Penticton 2020 is Amrit Dhaliwal and Princess Anne Hughes who will hand over their crowns in 2022.

The Miss Penticton Pageant started in 1948 when Miss Beverly Ann Young was crowned as the first Queen Val Vedette. Since those early days, the Miss Penticton Pageant has become a development program for young women, teaching confidence in public speaking, encouraging self-esteem, boosting community involvement and creating ambassadors for Penticton. The Miss Penticton program has strong ties to the community.

Through the duration of the candidacy, participants work together to improve their skills in areas of public speaking, interviewing, volunteerism, self-esteem, community involvement, confidence, and friendship.

There is a debut speech, talent night, a long speech on a topic of their choosing followed by two interviews with the panel of judges, involvement in the 2022 Peach Festival and a final Pageant night.

Stuart Bish of Stuart Bish Photography has been taking Miss Penticton’s pictures for decades and has each Miss Penticton documented on his website.
