Much-loved South Okanagan fireworks show cancelled to focus on 2022

In 2022, Osoyoos Canada fireworks will mark 25 years of lighting the night sky

There will be no fireworks on Canada Day in Osoyoos this year.

That decision was made in May because the volunteer group was unable to fundraise due to COVID-19 restrictions. The volunteers that put on the festival of fireworks have decided to focus on 2022 instead.

“We have not been able to fundraise — which usually starts May 1. Plus, they are only opening festivals up July 1 and this depends on how the next month goes and then it is at reduced numbers. We cannot control the number of people on the beaches,” said Annette Star on Facebook last month.

“But the anticipation is building for 2022 — we will still be celebrating our 25th anniversary and our team will be out May 1 of 2022 to beg for donations as we want this one to be the best ever.”

Osoyoos fireworks are some of the best around, both in elaborate displays and the length of the show.

But that kind of fireworks show takes six months to plan and fundraise.

All the hard work did pay off this week, when the town of Osoyoos awarded them the ‘Best Volunteer Project’ for their 2019 fireworks display.

“Thank you to the town of Osoyoos — next year we will have a fireworks show you will never forget,” said Star.
