No public ceremony in Keremeos for Remembrance Day

The public is asked to observe the two minutes of silence from wherever they are

There will be no public ceremony in Keremeos for Remembrance Day this year.

The Keremeos branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will be holding a private gathering for veterans and invited guests only.

The Keremeos Cenotaph and the area around it will be closed to the general public to keep the gathering to the 50 person maximum set by the province.

The Legion instead asks that people, wherever they are and whatever they are doing, pause for the two minutes of silence in remembrance on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

The Poppy Committee will place all wreaths ahead of the ceremony, and a roll call will be read for wreaths of remembrance placed at the cenotaph.

The wreaths can be purchased by calling the Keremeos Legion office at 250-499-5634. Payment can be made in cash, cheques payable to Royal Canadian Legion #192, or by e-transfer to rclsouthsim192@gmail.com.

There will be no veteran’s parade and no gathering at the Keremeos Legion ahead of the ceremony.

After the ceremony, the Legion canteen will be open for veterans, members and guests. There will be no community lunch or gathering this year.

Poppy donation boxes will be distributed through local businesses, schools and other services in Keremeos, Cawston and Hedley.

There is also an online donation form at https://www.legion.ca/remembrance/the-popp-campaign/donate-to-the-poppy-fund for those who are unable to donate locally.

Funds from the poppy donations are used to support veterans and other Legion programs.
