No soup for you!

The 24th annual Soup Bowls Project won’t be able to serve up any delicious soup for the fundraiser but the organizers at the Penticton Art Gallery have come up with a pretty cool alternative to the popular in-person event. It’s being dubbed Soup Bowls Project: COVID Style.

“Due to restrictions surrounding COVID-19, we will not be hosting this event in person like we usually do. Instead, we are offering take-home stocking stuffers,” said gallery curator Paul Crawford.

Each package will be lovingly wrapped and ready for you to give to a friend on a coffee date, to stick under the tree, or for you to enjoy for yourself.

All proceeds from the Soup Bowls Project will benefit the Penticton Art Gallery’s events and programming, including: Little Leonardos Pro-D Day Camps; Creative Kids Art Adventures; Young@Art after school program; Topics + Tea Lecture Series; Artist Talks; Workshops; Spring Break Creativity Classes; and more.

Last year, more than $20,000 was raised and more than a dozen different local restaurants and organizations provided their best broths, chowders and soups for the two nights of the sold-out event.

The winner of the first night went to the Nautical Dog’s Chowder, while Smugglers Smokehouse took home the second night’s top honour.

Recently, Penticton poet Shane Koyczan, who became famous when he recited his powerful poem “Cut” during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, participated in the Soup Bowls Projects fundraiser.

Each $25 soup bowl package includes:

- A handmade bowl from the Penticton + Summerland Potters Guilds (you get to choose your own from our Gift Shop)

- A Greatest Hits Top Secret Recipe Book, featuring 21 past Soup Bowls recipes

- Coupons for soup and other goodies from five fabulous local restaurants, thanks to Cannery Brewing, Brodo Kitchen, Nautical Dog Cafe, Smugglers Smoke House, and The Bench Market

Packages will be available at the Penticton Art Gallery Gift Shop starting Nov. 9.
