A one-month celebration of encaustic art is coming to the Peach City for the 15th year.
Community members are invited to experience the “natural magic” of encaustic paintings from May 14 to June 25 at the Penticton Arts Council for the annual Brilliant Moments display.
A total of 13 artists from the local group CanwaxWest are expected to have their works displayed at the gallery at 220 Manor Park Avenue, including the event’s first-ever featured artist, Penticton resident Carol Munro.
“It’s definitely a different form of art,” said Serena Ebuchi from the arts council. “If people are interested in seeing how encaustic art is made, we will be doing a demo on the opening day, May 14.”
Since 2006, local artists who specialize in the art form — better described as works created with beeswax paint — have come together in Penticton to give community members a different perspective on the world of paint.
“Encaustic art uses a mixture of hot beeswax and pigment as paint, which is typically layered to create opaque translucent effects and can be scraped, textured, or polished,” the art council said in a press release.
People are invited to watch the artists demonstrate how the paintings are created on May 14 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., as well as during Seniors’ Week on June 11.
The featured artist will have her own gallery area over the course of the Brilliant Moments display at the Penticton Arts Council.
“People can put their names in a free draw at any point during the exhibition and at the end of it, five prizes will be handed out in total,” Ebuchi said.
Admission is free.
