Penticton Peach Festival float turning heads

Since unveiling the new design in May, the float has captured a handful of awards

An updated design put a fresh breath of life into the Penticton Peach Festival float.

Since unveiling the new design in May, the float has captured a handful of awards while visiting other community parades.

“Thank you to the board members and float committee who worked together to come up with the new concept that has been capturing the attention of parade float judges in the communities that we visit. We also have great ambassadors in the Miss Penticton royalty, the board of directors and our host committee that assist in promoting and encouraging people to visit Penticton,” said Penticton Peach Festival president Don Kendall.

The float design incorporates the sun rising over Munson Mountain, a paddlewheel at the back in tribute of the S.S. Sicamous, green and blue trim to represent the lakes and agricultural areas and peaches that spring up all around the float.

The renovations were completed over the winter thanks to $30,000 of funding, evenly split between the City of Penticton, Travel Penticton and the Peach Festival Society.

The float, which will cruise in over 20 parades this season, has won the Grand Marshall Award for third place in the 12,000 to 200,000 population category at the Spokane Lilac Festival, the Queens Award at the Marysville, Wash. Strawberry Festival, Directors Award at the New Westminster Hyack Festival and best float at Osoyoos Canada Day Cherry Festival parade.

The float has rolled through the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival, which was televised, in Wenatchee on May 4 and most recently at the Calgary Stampede, also televised, where the float took third place in the community category.

The Penticton Peach Festival takes place Aug. 7 to 11, with the Peters Bros. Grand Parade on Saturday Aug. 10.
