Penticton's newest sports team is getting a helping hand from a local bar, as it gears up to hit the gridiron his fall.

The Dragonboat Pub is hosting a fundraiser on Sept. 14, in support of the U12 Penticton Mavericks football team.

Dubbed the "Beer and Burger Fundraiser," the event will run from noon to 4 p.m. and also feature 50/50 raffle tickets and silent auction items.

The Mavericks formed earlier this year following efforts to revive the Penticton Minor Football Association (PMFA). The sport hadn't been played at the minor level in Penticton in 17 years, according to the association.

Representing the only squad to play within PMFA in 2024, the Mavericks will battle teams this fall from Kelowna, Salmon Arm, Vernon and Kamloops in the Southern Interior Conference.

The local U12 team recently hosted the Vernon Magnums for an exhibition game at McNicoll Field. Volunteers from PMFA organized a barbecue by-donation at the game to help pay for the players' equipment.

Funds raised at the event later this month are expected to go toward the team's operation costs, travel, and equipment, as it prepares to play its inaugural season.

The Dragonboat Pub is located at 3895 Lakeside Rd., on the northeast side of Skaha Lake.
