There’s no shortage of novels, games and puzzles at the Penticton Curling Club this week for the rotary club’s 15th annual used book sale.
After a two-year hiatus, the Penticton Sunrise Rotary Club’s book sale returned on Wednesday, April 27, and did so in record fashion.
“Thursday (April 28) was the best day we’ve ever had in 15 years of doing this,” said Alex Bodden, the president of the Rotary club.
Bodden added that Penticton residents stepped up in a big way, collectively donating 20k books to the club ahead of the sale.
“About two-thirds of what’s here is from 2020,” he said. “We were shut down by COVID so the books have been in storage ever since.”
As of Friday morning, April 29, the president of the club estimates that between 5,000 to 6,000 books have been sold.
The sale ends on Saturday, April 30, at 5 p.m. at the curling club next to the South Okanagan Events Centre.
Proceeds from the event go to local Rotary projects, like the recently organized Earth Day community clean-up.
Non-fiction stories, children’s novels and even audiobooks are among the many items on display.
“With Rotary, one of our big areas of focus is literacy,” Bodden said. “So, this is great because a lot of people can get a lot of cheap books this way.”
Before Wednesday’s return, the book sale hadn’t happened since 2019.
